Breast Cancer Awareness Month Playlist

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to reflect on the brave battles that many women have fought and continue to fight every day. It is also a time to showcase the internal strength that every woman possesses and focus on the importance of female empowerment. With that, here is a list of songs by strong women for strong women to keep on repeat for the month of October.

“Throw Me a Party” – Rita Wilson
I’ll leave footprints for you in the sand
A couple of notes only you’ll understand
I have one wish that someday you’ll see
How much your love, your love has meant to me
So when I’m gone, throw me a party
You should dance as if I was there
Don’t be sad or be broken-hearted
Just send your voices up in the air

This powerful song was written by Rita Wilson the very day she received her breast cancer diagnosis, which she ultimately overcame. According to cancer.org, it is estimated that breast cancer will claim the lives of 42,120 women every year. This song shows the importance of celebrating the lives of those women, despite the mourning.

“Fight Song” – Rachel Platten
This is my fight song
Take back my life song
Prove I’m alright song
My power’s turned on
Starting right now I’ll be strong
I’ll play my fight song
And I don’t care if nobody else believes
‘Cause I’ve still got a lot of fight left in me

This is truly one of the ultimate songs of female empowerment, encouraging women everywhere to embrace their inner strength. It also encourages the idea of female independence and the importance of being your own person and following your own path regardless of what others may think. There is never any shame in being your own person and fighting for what you believe in.

“Pink Warrior” – Candy Coburn
She wears a pink ballcap and a pink durag
Pink ribbon on her SUV
It’s been a long hard fight but she’s kicked it twice
‘Cause she don’t know the word defeat
She’s walkin’ for the big cure
Mothers, daughters, sisters
They’re facin’ this head on
Talk about being strong

This is a beautiful song that truly relays the beauty and power of women who unite together under a single cause. Finding the cure for breast cancer is a common dream for women everywhere, and this cause brings thousands of women together in unity to fight for the same goal in the advancement of women’s health. All women, young and old, have the power to stand against this disease.

“Brave” – Sara Bareilles
Everybody’s been there, everybody’s been stared down by the enemy
Fallen for the fear and done some disappearing
Bow down to the mighty
Don’t run, stop holding your tongue
Maybe there’s a way out of the cage where you live
Maybe one of these days you can let the light in
Show me how big your brave is
Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

Sometimes the most powerful tool that women possess is the ability to speak up for themselves, even in situations where doing so may be a bit frightening. Bravery is key for women everywhere, and this catchy song encapsulates that idea perfectly. Don’t hold back!

“Superwoman” – Alicia Keys
For all the mothers fighting
For better days to come
And all my women, all my women sitting here trying
To come home before the sun
And all my sisters
Coming together
Say yes I will
Yes I can
I am a Superwoman
Yes I am
Yes she is
Even when I’m a mess

Every woman has a battle unique to her, but every woman also has the power to rise up against any challenges that may try to put her down. This song is the perfect anthem for women everywhere to recognize their own daily struggles for what they are. Every small step is an accomplishment worth celebrating.
