ICYMI: #HighVoltageWoman IG Live featuring Fake Dad

BY LAURA HARPER/WWR Staff Writer

In the modern world of making music, creative control can be an extremely valuable asset, and an artist taking full advantage of that fact is the wonderfully unique duo of Fake Dad.

Fake Dad consists of vocalist Andrea de Varona and her partner Josh Ford. The pair met through a mutual friend while attending college at New York University, and they soon began dating and creating music together.

“Music has always been at the center of our relationship,” de Varona said. “It has made us stronger.”

De Varona and Ford have been together for about five years and have been making music and performing together for about four years. De Varona says that the unspoken language of a relationship is very helpful in fueling the creative process.

Now, Fake Dad creates and produces all of their own music themselves from their studio apartment in Brooklyn, New York. They both agreed that a big part of learning the production process came from watching other people do it and asking lots of questions.

“Production in 2022 is synonymous with creative control,” Ford said. “You can’t really decide what your music sounds like and have it fully come from within you if you’re not producing it.”

“It’s so liberating to be able to produce your own music,” de Varona said.

While creative differences often arise between band members, Fake Dad says that they often use those differences to their advantage and are able to overcome them with relative ease.

“Everything we do ends up being collaborative in some way,” Ford said.

That collaboration is what allowed them to develop a rather unique sound. They describe their sound as being honest, intimate, and vulnerable, but also fun. They want people to be able to connect to their music and feel understood. The name Fake Dad was even chosen for its vibe, as they wanted something that would be fun and memorable.

Currently, Fake Dad has some new music in the works. During the interview, they played a song that has yet to be released called “How Do I Cry” that is meant to explore the human relationship with crying. This song is expected to be officially released in May, but they encouraged viewers to send them a direct message on Instagram if they would like a private link to listen to the recorded version.

In addition to new music, Fake Dad will also be playing their first live show of the year next week. While they have typically only played shows in the New York area, they are also looking to plan a tour this summer to connect with fans outside of New York who have been wanting to see them perform live. If you happen to catch a live performance of theirs, be sure to mention the Women Who Rock IG Live for a merch hookup.

Also, be sure to keep an eye on their social media pages for more information regarding their upcoming drops of handmade merch, including the special knit hats they wore during the interview.
