ICYMI: #WomanCrushWednesday IG Live featuring Dossey

Hailing from the small town of Montgomery, Texas, Dossey had a humble beginning that really allowed her truly impressive music career to take off.
Dossey said that she has been singing for as long as she could sing; in fact, she got her start by making up and singing her own jingles. Then, at the age of 12, her dad gave her his classical guitar and started teaching her how to play, beginning with a mastery of Bob Dylan songs.
Now, living in Austin, Teas, Dossey has made a name for herself by making her own music and offering live performances best defined by her powerful and dominating stage presence. Speaking on Austin’s prevalent music scene, Dossey says that people tend to choose the city for its wealth of musicians and opportunities to play.
“It’s an easy place to jam and be challenged,” she said.
While some things have certainly slowed down as a result of the COVID-19 global pandemic, Dossey has made an effort to stay connected with her fans and continue spreading her passion for music. One prominent way she was starting a virtual event called Quarantuned.
Quarantuned featured almost all Austin-based artists in a song-swap, exposing her fanbase to artists who they may not otherwise have had a chance to experience. While she has taken a short hiatus from this project, Dossey says she is looking to restart it sometime in the future.
Another way Dossey has dealt with quarantine is to naturally work on new music. She has already released two new songs this year, with another song called “Animal” slated for release on September 25 and a music video for her song “Someone to Love” coming in October.
“I feel a heavy responsibility as an artist to help people through situations like this,” Dossey said. “Artists interpret the world for everyone else.”
Despite her success, however, Dossey says that she does still face some challenges as a woman in the music industry, especially with the music scene in Austin being largely male dominated. Mostly, her biggest fear has been that people would not take her seriously.
While she notices that some men have the power to get things done instantly, Dossey refuses to be deterred. In general, the Austin music scene is beginning to warm up to different forms of music, particularly pop.
Dossey continues to maintain her power and confidence is through her eye-catching fashion on stage. She says she prefers flashier ensembles because they make her feel worth listening too.
“Sequins are a cheap trick,” Dossey said. “Dossey is just an expanded version of myself.”
