Women's Health Conditions

BY LAURA HARPER/WWR Staff Writer

Women are powerhouses, always rising to any occasion and facing challenges head-on for both their families and their careers. That makes it even more crucial for women to be mindful of their health, especially since there are some health conditions that women tend to be more at risk for. Keep reading to learn about some of conditions that often impact women, and how best to advocate for yourself when speaking to your doctor.

1. Heart Disease

In the United States, heart disease is the leading cause of death among women. Certain activities can lower the risk of heart disease, such as regular exercise and eating a balanced diet, but it’s still important to see your doctor for regular checks on your heart health.

2. Breast Cancer

One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetimes. If caught early, advances in medicine allow for a greater survival rate for breast cancer victims, making it imperative for women to have regular mammograms as recommended by their doctor.

3. Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a very painful condition in which the tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside of the uterus. If untreated, this condition can impact fertility, which makes it important to discuss any concerns with your gynecologist during annual exams.

4. Ovarian and Cervical Cancer

Cancers that target the ovaries and cervix can share some of the same symptoms, but both must be regularly checked for, especially if risk factors run in your family. More women die from ovarian cancer than any other forms of gynecological cancers combined.

5. Depression and Anxiety

Although there may not be any physical signs of anxiety or depression, taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health. Changes in mood and appetite are often big indicators of both depression and anxiety, and discussing these things with your doctor without the fear of shame or stigma is very important to seeking treatment.
