All Female ‘Artist of the Year’ Nominations for the First Time in History

This year, women made history at MTV’s Video Music Awards in one of the most sought-after award categories, Artist of the Year. For the first time in the history of the awards show, all six nominees are female artists.

The nominees this year were Beyoncé, Doja Cat, Karol G, Nicki Minaj, Shakira, and Taylor Swift.

This year, Beyoncé and Taylor have been taking over the world with their sold-out stadium tours, The Renaissance World Tour and The Eras Tour, respectively. Additionally, in 2023, Doja Cat, Karol G, Nicki Minaj, and Shakira have all put out new music that their fans have been absolutely loving. The award focuses not only on the artist’s projects, but their cultural impact and activity outside of their music.

The Artist of the Year award has been given to artists like Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, and Bad Bunny in the past.

Taylor Swift took home the award and celebrated by thanking her fans for their support throughout the years. With this win, the four artists with the most VMA wins overall are all women: Beyoncé (25), Taylor Swift (23), Madonna (20) and Lady Gaga (18).
